How to Spend A Day in Alicante
Castillo de Santa Barbara
Perched high above the city on Mount Benacantil, the Castillo de Santa Barbara is one of Alicante’s most iconic landmarks. Dating back to the 9th century, this fortress offers stunning panoramic views of the city, the coastline, and the mountains beyond. Whether you're a history buff or just love a great view, this spot won’t disappoint.
Wandering around the castle is like stepping back in time. The structure still holds onto its Moorish roots with light-colored stone and intricate arches, even though much of the original decoration hasn’t survived. Keep in mind, though—this castle is more of a fortress, with rugged cobblestone paths and steep stairways, so wear your comfy shoes! You can explore at your own pace, and while there are some informative signs, the real joy comes from soaking in the atmosphere and the incredible views.
If you’re visiting during the warmer months, try to avoid the midday heat, especially if you plan on walking up the hill. There’s a lift from the beachside that’ll save you the steep climb. And while there’s a café on-site, it’s probably best for a quick drink rather than a full meal. Overall, the Castle of Santa Barbara is a must-visit, even if it's just for the views.
Alicante Golf
For golf enthusiasts, Alicante Golf is a standout. Located right on San Juan Beach and just a short drive from the city center, it’s one of Spain’s top-rated courses. Designed by the legendary Severiano Ballesteros, this par 72 course offers a unique layout with six par 3s, six par 4s, and six par 5s—meaning no two consecutive holes are the same. This makes for a fun and varied round with plenty of chances for birdies.
What really sets Alicante Golf apart is its combination of history and sport. The course itself is well-maintained, with wide fairways and quick greens, but on the 14th hole, you'll find the ruins of a Roman villa from the first century BC! It’s not often you can hit a round of golf with ancient history in the background.
The facilities are top-notch too. The clubhouse offers everything you need, from locker rooms and a pro shop to restaurants and a bar where you can relax post-game. There’s also a driving range and practice greens to hone your skills before hitting the course. If you're playing in the summer heat, I’d definitely recommend renting a buggy as some of the tees are a bit spread out.
One thing to note: while the course is generally in good condition, a few fairways were dry during my visit, and the greens were heavily sanded. Still, for its central location and scenic layout, Alicante Golf is definitely worth a visit.
Gastro Club
If you’re ever in search of a spot that combines exceptional food with a refined atmosphere, look no further than Gastroclub. My recent lunch there did not disappoint, and I can honestly say it was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a while. Let me take you through why this place is a must-visit. The meal kicked off with a light and fresh salad, a perfect starter to get the appetite going. But what really stole the show was the main course. I ordered both steak and chicken, and while the steak was delicious, it was the chicken that completely blew me away. It was, without exaggeration, the best chicken I’ve ever had—so tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Every bite was heavenly, and it left me craving more long after the plate was clean.
The attention to detail in the food preparation really shined through. The steak was cooked to perfection, but the star of the meal was undoubtedly that chicken. If you visit, do yourself a favor and order it. Trust me, you won't regret it!
Beyond the delicious food, Gastroclub’s ambience is something to admire. The restaurant is beautifully designed with high ceilings and large windows that allow natural light to flood the room, creating a bright and airy feel. The space is elegantly furnished with a modern touch, making it feel upscale yet comfortable. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy a relaxed lunch while feeling just a bit fancy.
One of the things that stood out during my visit was the exceptional service. The staff at Gastroclub were incredibly attentive—always there when needed, but never overbearing. They made sure everything was just right, adding to the overall pleasant experience. It’s clear that attention to detail extends beyond the food and into every aspect of the dining experience.
