Exploring Lausanne

Lausanne is one of those places that just feels easy to settle into, especially when you’re traveling solo. The city sits right on Lake Geneva, with the Alps off in the distance, so no matter where you go, the views are pretty amazing. I love how peaceful it feels by the water—it’s a great spot to take a walk, sit by the lake, or just clear your head.

The old town is full of history, and you can really feel it when you’re wandering around. The Lausanne Cathedral is probably the biggest standout. It’s this huge Gothic building, and if you’re up for a bit of exercise, climbing the tower is totally worth it for the views. You get a clear shot of the city, the lake, and even the mountains if the weather cooperates.

One of my favorite spots in Lausanne is Ouchy, down by the lake. It’s a super chill area where you can walk along the promenade, watch the sailboats, or grab a coffee and people-watch. It’s the kind of place where time slows down a bit, and it’s perfect for just hanging out without feeling rushed.

Best Hotel To Stay In: Royal Savoy Lausanne

Just a short walk from the main train station and about ten minutes from Lake Geneva, you'll find the Royal Savoy Lausanne. This five-star hotel, fully revamped in 2015, blends old-world charm with modern luxury. The original neoclassical chateau is beautifully connected to a sleek, contemporary building that houses the spa.

During my stay, I opted for a Deluxe Room with a lake view, located on the 4th floor of the original building. The room had a decent amount of space, but what really stood out was the view. I could see all of downtown Lausanne, Lake Geneva, and the surrounding mountains—definitely the highlight of the stay.

The room's design felt a bit moodier compared to the rest of the hotel, but the high-quality furniture and finishes made up for it. The bathroom was stocked with Bvlgari toiletries, which added a nice touch of luxury. One thing I really appreciated was how peaceful the room was at night, even with the Skylounge just a couple of floors above. It’s a great place to relax after a day of exploring Lausanne.

Lunch Recommendation: Le Palais Oriental

Le Palais Oriental in Montreux isn’t just about the food—it’s a full sensory experience. From the moment you step inside, you’re transported to a different world. The décor is elegant yet cozy, with Middle Eastern touches everywhere—intricate lanterns, warm colors, and a welcoming vibe that instantly makes you feel at ease. And with the restaurant set right along Lake Geneva, the views are stunning, especially if you can grab a table near the windows or, even better, outside.

The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined, making it a great spot whether you’re on a casual outing or looking for a special dining experience. There's something about the combination of the beautiful setting, the scent of spices in the air, and the soft murmur of conversations that makes you feel like you're on a little escape from the everyday.

Le Palais Oriental in Montreux is one of those spots that offers a blend of exotic flavors right on the shores of Lake Geneva. The ambiance is warm and inviting, with a hint of luxury thanks to its beautifully designed interior and its picturesque setting.

When I visited, I started off with their Potage du Jour—a soup that was light yet packed with flavor. It was the perfect way to ease into the meal, and from there, things only got better. The Salade Shirazi brought a refreshing mix of cucumbers, tomatoes, and herbs, a great balance to the rich Middle Eastern and North African dishes on the menu.

I couldn’t resist ordering the Hoummos—creamy, rich, and served with warm, soft bread. It’s the kind of dish that instantly transports you to a different part of the world with its familiar but comforting taste.

For the main course, I went with the Couscous Poulet. The chicken was tender and flavorful, served with a generous portion of couscous and vegetables. It was hearty and satisfying, the kind of dish that leaves you feeling content and warm, especially after a day of exploring Montreux.

To round things off, I kept things simple with a San Pellegrino—a refreshing way to wash down all those rich flavors.

Le Palais Oriental is a place where the food is not just a meal but an experience. Whether you're familiar with the flavors of the Middle East or just looking to try something different while in Montreux, this restaurant delivers. It’s an ideal spot for anyone wanting to enjoy a leisurely meal by the lake, with views that match the quality of the food.
