Exploring Chartres, France

About Chartres:

Chartres, a picturesque city located in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France, is best known for its stunning Gothic cathedral, Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres. This UNESCO World Heritage site is often considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe, and its towering spires and magnificent stained glass windows draw visitors from around the world. The cathedral's remarkable collection of medieval stained glass is particularly famous, telling biblical stories in vibrant colors that have withstood the test of time.

But Chartres is more than just its cathedral. The city's charming old town, with its narrow, cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses, offers a delightful glimpse into medieval France. Strolling through these streets, you'll find a mix of quaint boutiques, traditional bakeries, and cozy cafés where you can enjoy a coffee or a pastry while soaking in the historic ambiance.

Chartres is also known for its beautiful gardens and the Eure River that gently winds its way through the city. The riverbanks provide a serene setting for leisurely walks, and the city's parks are perfect for a relaxing afternoon outdoors. The Bishop's Palace gardens, adjacent to the cathedral, offer panoramic views of the city and are a favorite spot for both locals and tourists.

Throughout the year, Chartres hosts a variety of cultural events, the most famous being the "Chartres en Lumières" festival. From April to October, the city’s monuments and buildings are illuminated with breathtaking light displays, turning Chartres into a vibrant, glowing wonderland each evening. This festival is a testament to the city’s rich artistic heritage and its commitment to celebrating its past while embracing the present.

In addition to its cultural and historical significance, Chartres is conveniently located just about an hour’s train ride from Paris, making it an ideal day trip for those looking to explore more of France beyond the capital. The city’s welcoming atmosphere, combined with its rich history and stunning architecture, make Chartres a must-visit destination for anyone traveling through France.

Where I stayed: Hotel & Spa Le Grand Monarque Chartres

I was looking for a place that offered a bit of luxury without the over-the-top flash, and the Grand Monarque Hotel & Spa delivered exactly that. The moment I stepped inside, I could feel the understated elegance that defines this hotel. It’s the kind of silent luxury that doesn’t need to shout—everything from the decor to the service speaks for itself.

The hotel is impeccably maintained, blending a sense of history with modern touches. I loved how cozy the rooms and common areas felt, with every corner thoughtfully decorated. The thick red carpets with silver-gilt bars and the padded walls added a sense of warmth and comfort, making it easy to relax and feel at home. The attention to detail here is impressive, right down to the Grohe faucets in the bathroom, which added a touch of class to my small but well-equipped room.

One thing that really stood out was the professionalism of the staff. It’s rare these days to find service that is so consistently excellent, but the team at Grand Monarque nailed it. From the moment I arrived, they were dedicated to making sure everything went smoothly. The check-in process was quick and easy, and I appreciated the helpful guide they provided for exploring the Chartres illuminations, which turned out to be a highlight of my trip.

Parking was a breeze, which was a relief since the hotel is located on a busy road. I’m glad I pre-booked their private parking for just €10 a night—it made everything so much easier. There’s a convenient drop-off spot right by the hotel where you can unload your luggage, and the valet service was incredibly efficient. In the morning, my car was ready within minutes, parked just steps from the hotel entrance.

The room itself was on the smaller side, but it had everything I needed. The air conditioning was a lifesaver during the warm summer nights, and the shower was fantastic with double basins that made getting ready in the morning a breeze. The decor in the room matched the rest of the hotel, with flocked wallpaper and padded tapestry-style wall coverings that added to the cozy, classic feel.

Breakfast was the only aspect that left me a bit puzzled. They had a system in place due to Covid restrictions where you fill out a form the night before with your breakfast choices. I selected quite a few options, thinking that would be it, but when I arrived in the morning, my choices were on the table, and there was also a more extensive buffet available. It was a little confusing, and I ended up leaving more food behind than I would have liked, but the selection was good, especially if you’re a fan of scrambled eggs and other hot options.
